The Department of Defense (DoD) has been hosting a Readiness and Environmental Protection Integration (REPI) Challenge for 12 years. DoD defines the REPI Challenge as “a competition with dedicated funding to advance REPI project outcomes through large-scale innovation and conservation.”
In 2023, seventeen innovative proposals were submitted for evaluation. Thirteen proposals were selected for funding. The Northern Virginia Regional Commission (NVRC) was one of the recipients and will receive $286,000 for flooding and erosion projects adjacent to Marine Corps Base Quantico in Prince William County.
According to DoD the “REPI Program facilitates long-term, collaborative partnerships that improve resilience, preserve important habitats and natural resources, and promote sustainable land uses near installations and ranges.” NVRC submitted a collaborative project that will improve the resilience of Marine Corps Base Quantico and potentially improve the stream and shoreline habitats adjacent to the installation boundary.
NVRC is working with the Commonwealth, Prince William County, the Virginia Institute for Marine Sciences, and AECOM to identify natural infrastructure solutions to flooding at the Fuller Gate and shoreline erosion at the Marine Corps Air Facility Quantico. NVRC will use the REPI Challenge funds to complete designs solutions for the flooding and erosion. NVRC hopes to leverage the REPI Challenge designs to apply for Defense Community Infrastructure Program (DCIP) funding in October 2023.
NVRC plans to kick-off the REPI Challenge design analysis in March 2023. For information about the REPI Challenge reach out to Chris Landgraf at clandgraf@novaregion.org.
