New Population Data for Northern Virginia Towns Released
The largest year-over-year population gains from 2022 to 2023 were the Town of Herndon at 749, Leesburg at 260, and Dumfries at 60.
The Census Bureau released the 2020 to 2023 annual population estimates series of incorporated places on Thursday, May 16.
Following are population highlights and data from this release follow.
Population Highlights
The population of Northern Virginia in 2023 was estimated to be 2,556,143. The fourteen incorporated towns of Northern Virginia together have a total estimated population of 113,621 in 2023. The four NVRC member incorporated towns have an estimated population of 96,469 in 2023.
The largest year-over-year population gains from 2022 to 2023 were the Town of Herndon at 749, Leesburg at 260, and Dumfries at 60. The largest year-over-year percentage change in population were Herndon at 3.1% and Dumfries at 2.8%.
Leesburg is Northern Virginia’s largest town, with an estimated population of 49,312 in 2023. Leesburg, like much of Loudoun County, has undergone substantial growth and development over the last 20+ years. In 2000, the Decennial Census indicated that the town had a population of 28,311. Twenty-three years later the population is approximately 21,000 or 74% greater.
The smallest town in Northern Virginia is the Town of Hillsboro in Loudoun County, with an estimated population of 112. The Town of Hillsboro is in the heart of farm and winery country in Loudoun County.
